Ten days in North Yorkshire brought to Swiss eyes surprise after surprise at what the region had to offer: the historic city of York, where we walked the city walls and the ancient streets; the four-hour cliff-top hike on the North Sea coast; the extensive gardens, parkland and interior of a Lord’s palace; the magnificent ruins of a Cistercian abbey; the two valleys Swaledale and Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Here the two rivers run fast, often over waterfalls and past sheep farms, and paths lead up to the high, wide peat(Torf)moors, a wild landscape with distant views, no houses, sheep living half wild, and no sound except the calls of the curlews.
